Mammography uses a low-dose x-ray to examine breast tissue – this is an important component in the early detection of breast cancer.
The Canadian Cancer Society (CCS) recommends women between 50 to 69 have a mammogram every two years. They also recommend women between 40 to 49 and 70+ speak with their doctors about their risk for breast cancer and the risks/benefits of getting a mammogram at their particular age.

Screening Mammogram
Screening Mammography
CGA offers screening mammography in the Calgary & Cold Lake Clinics, which are performed for women who have no symptoms or signs of breast cancer and are considered at average risk for breast cancer. Screening mammography monitors the changes in the breast over time and can help in the early diagnosis of breast cancer.
Diagnostic Mammography
Diagnostic mammograms are offered in the Calgary clinic and are used for women who have symptoms such as a lump, pain, nipple thickening or discharge, or whose breasts have changed shape or size.
For women age 40-49 who choose to be screened, annual screening is recommended. After your first one, you can self-refer without a requisition from your doctor, if you do not have any of the following:
New breast concerns/symptoms (e.g. lump)
Personal history of breast cancer
Breast surgery of any kind in the last three (3) years
Patients over the age of 50 who have never had a mammogram can self-refer as long as they have a physician to send the report to.
Patients are allowed to self-refer for mammograms as often as every year.
Tomosynthesis (Calgary)
Tomosynthesis (tomo), also known as 3D mammography, is a new tool used during a mammogram to help identify any abnormalities in your breast tissue. It uses low-dose X-ray to sweep over your breast in a matter of seconds. Tomo can help detect more breast cancers than a standard digital mammography. For patients, the exam experience is no different than any other standard mammogram.

No, you do not. Your primary physician may suggest a clinic location for you; however, that doesn’t mean you are required to get your exam at that location. We invite you to visit our clinic or any location for your exam where you feel safe and comfortable.
If you are due for your routine screening mammogram, in some scenarios there is an option for a “self-referral.” This will save you visiting the doctor for a requisition form. There are certain criteria you must meet, so please call for more information to determine if you qualify for this option. If you have any concerns about your breast health, please speak to your doctor.
Yes, we have qualified female and male technologists available to complete your scan.
Our qualified technologists will perform your examination for our radiologists, who will interpret and put into a report.
Please note technologists cannot give exam results.
This report will be issued shortly after your appointment and faxed directly to your referring doctor. We recommend that you make an appointment with your health care provider, one to two business days after your exam to discuss your results.
Your exam requires a high level of focus for our technologists to accurately capture the images we require for your exam. If you have small children, please do your best to leave them with someone else or have someone come with you to sit with them in the waiting room.
Different types of scans require different preparation. Please visit your specific exam page to learn more about your required preparation.
